Genetic counsellors are health professionals qualified in both counselling and genetics who often work as part of a genetic services team. Genetic counsellors usually work with associated healthcare professionals such as geneticists, obstetricians, oncologists, neurologists and cardiologists.

As well as providing emotional support, genetic counsellors can help you to understand a genetic condition and what causes it.

Genetic counsellors are trained to provide information and support that is sensitive to your family circumstances, culture and beliefs.

  • take a family and personal medical history
  • advice about discussing testing with other family members
  • advice on genetic conditions and how it may affect family members
  • advice on support services and resources
  • counselling and support to promote informed choices, risk assessment, family goals, ethical and religious matters.

Eligibility

If you are referred to a geneticist, it is likely that you will also be paired with a genetic counsellor who will support you while you attend genetic services.

If you have urgent concerns, you can contact the genetic service directly and speak to an intake assistant or genetic counsellor over the phone.

Costs

Genetic counsellors may be part of a genetic service. The service can advise costs to you note that some genetic counselling services are included in the service fee. Discuss costs with the genetic service.
