  • Tetanus is a serious infectious disease that is spread from the environment to humans.
  • Tetanus can lead to muscle spasms, breathing problems and death. It requires immediate medical attention.
  • Infection can occur after a minor injury (like small punctures to the skin) or from deep or dirty wounds, open fractures, burns or animal bites.
  • If you get a wound and you haven't been immunised for tetanus in the last 5 years, visit your doctor as soon as possible.
  • The best prevention against tetanus is immunisation.
