Melissa: You don’t have to be a medical expert to know that laughter is good for the body and soul.

Speakers: Ho, ho, ha, ha, ha.

Melissa: And at this place, you don’t even need a reason.

Melissa: Here’s a tip - if you’re having trouble, just fake it ‘til you make it.

Melissa: Philippa Chambers is the founder of Laughter Clubs, Victoria. Today’s session is in Catani Gardens, St Kilder. This group meets here at 10.00am every Saturday morning.

Philippa: We take our hands, heel and palm to the fingertips, and we simple clap.

Speakers: Ho, ho, ha, ha, ha. Ho, ho, ha, ha, ha. Ho, ho, ha, ha, ha.

Melissa: Anytime we laugh, the feeling that something good is happening to us is instantaneous. That’s why laughter clubs are becoming more and more popular by the day.

Speaker 1: It is good for the breathing. I’ve got emphysema and I’ve noticed my breathing is better when I have a good laugh.

Speakers: [Laughter]

Speaker 1: I’ve become more outgoing. I used to be very reserved and shy and very quiet and…

Melissa: Gosh, you would never think so.

Speakers: Ho, ho, ha, ha, ha. Ho, ho, ha, ha, ha.

Speaker 2: It does free you up. It makes you much more light hearted and less serious and more free.

Melissa: Apart from all these bonuses, laughing just makes you feel good and it’s free.

Speaker 3: How do I describe it? Kind of warm, fuzzy feeling.

Melissa: Do you feel like you’ve got a lot more energy now?

Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely.

Speakers: [Laughter]

Melissa: And this activity is open to everyone. Anyone of any age can take part. Do many men come down?

Speaker 4: Unfortunately no. We average say 12 to 15 people and three of them might be men, yeah.

Melissa: So, what would you say to those men out there that are a little hesitant?

Speaker 4: Oh, get down here. It’s so good. You get to hang out with 15 women and you have a laugh through it as well.

Speaker 5: A bit of a sceptic, so I wasn’t… you know, I wasn’t looking forward to it too much, but I have to say, I’m very surprised. It definitely brings you awake, gets the blood flowing, makes you happy. It’s really good; I recommend it.

Speakers: Yes, come and join us.

Speaker 6: [0:02:14] or come and join in.

Speakers: Oh, yeah.

Melissa: Funnily enough, we’ve caught the attention of a cyclist riding by and he’s brave enough to join in. I’ve just recruited a new member, guys! This is Andrew and it’s his lucky day. Little did he know he was just about to win Tut’s lotto.

Philippa: We check our numbers.

Speakers: Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.

Philippa: What do you do then?

Speakers: [Laughter]

Melissa: The funny thing is when we’re laughing, it’s really like a form of meditation because we tend to focus on how we’re feeling and what we’re laughing at. Kaz uses a special laughter dance to start every day.

Kaz: Ho, ho, ha, ha, hee, hee. Ho, ho, ha, ha, hee, hee.

Melissa: Why not give it a try when you wake up tomorrow and see how you feel? All this laughing really works up a sweat. So now, I think it’s time to cool down with a milkshake…

Speakers: [laughter]

Melissa: … a massage…

Speakers: [Laughter]

Melissa: … and a good stretch.

Speaker 1: See how you can stretch up to the sky.
