Disability support services work with people with a disability, their families and carers. A range of support is available for people with an intellectual, physical, sensory or neurological disability or acquired brain injury. These services are provided by both government and non-government organisations.
In Victoria, disability services are provided and funded by the Disability Services Division of the Victorian Department of Human Services. The Disability Act 2006 describes the particular groups of people that can access these government-funded services.
Trained staff are available
There are eight regional Disability Services offices around Victoria. Each office has a Disability Intake and Response Team that is available to provide information about general, community and government-funded supports and services. Special staff called Client Services Access Workers provide information on the services that are available.
The Disability Intake and Response Service can also provide assistance with planning and support to people with disabilities, their families and carers in their local area.
