Are you at risk of type 2 diabetes? The best way to reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes is to make changes to your lifestyle – maintain a healthy weight, get physically active and follow a healthy balanced eating plan.
Making lifestyle changes isn’t easy, especially on your own, but help is available.
Step 1 – check your risk
The Australian Type 2 Diabetes Risk Assessment Tool (RAT) is a free online tool. It calculates your risk of developing type 2 diabetes within the next five years.
Step 2 – get support
The RAT will assess your level of risk. Using your risk score, it will give you details of support services such as:
- Life! Taking Action on Diabetes (for those with a risk score of 15 or more) – these are locally run prevention courses held in Victoria to help people lose at least 5 per cent of their body weight and to increase their level of physical activity.
- Life! online (for those with a risk score of 7 or more) – this is a 24 week guided glucose management program. Eligible Victorians can access meal plans, activity information and tips in the privacy of their own homes.
- 'Go for your life' Infoline – 1300 73 98 99 – for information on physical activity, healthy eating and community activities.
13 RISK
13 RISK (13 7475) is a confidential telephone service available 8am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday. Chat with a professional advisor or order a free type 2 diabetes risk assessment kit.
If you have a query about your risk score or are concerned about developing type 2 diabetes, call 13 RISK (13 7475). Alternatively discuss your risk with your doctor.
