Q: I'm 12 weeks pregnant and I play drums in a loud rock band. After getting over the worst of my morning sickness, I would like to get back into drumming again. What effects can this have on my baby? I have heard of pregnant women playing in bands through their pregnancies. (Female, 31)
A: I am not aware of any problems with drumming and pregnancy. The causes of deafness that babies are born with are either genetic or relate to infections during pregnancy such as rubella.
Continuing regular exercise during an uncomplicated pregnancy is good. It would be reasonable to follow the general guidelines on exercise in pregnancy (see the Better Health Channel fact sheet on Pregnancy and exercise), such as keeping your heart rate below 140 beats per minute and not to exercise to the point of exhaustion. You may find the physical limitations of later pregnancy make it more difficult to reach the drums. It would be useful to talk to your antenatal care provider to seek any further information.
